Chapter Four

Turns out I can’t get drunk, which was disappointing as fuck! I actually have to go through eternity completely sober. Being what I am and having to do what I had to do, I couldn’t even drown my sorrows in a bottle of Jack. This shit was just cruel and unusual punishment. I woke up a little later than I intended. My body felt normal, but energized in spite of downing two full packs of beer. I didn’t even get a buzz. Shit. Anyway, I hurried and dressed, then left my apartment. I couldn’t help but look at the door across from mine, Mrs. Bateman’s. She was dead now because of me. I never really cared for the elderly lady, because on top of being nosey, she was judgmental and rude, but she didn’t deserve to die.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered to her memory, then walked away. Her murder would have to go unsolved and the bad thing is, her death wasn’t considered a homicide. I shook my head, I needed to clear my thoughts of such things. It wouldn’t bring her back and would only make me feel worse than I already felt.

I climbed inside my car and headed to work. Before going into the precinct, I stopped and grabbed a few breakfast sandwiches and two coffees. I met up with Sheila in the hallway and handed her one of the sandwiches and a coffee.

“Thanks.” She looked at the bag. “Oooh, I love this place. Great food. You must have had a good night last night to splurge this morning with your cheap ass.”

Good isn’t the word I would use to describe the night I had or the one before it. “My day off was… eventful,” I said. “So, you ready?”

She nodded and we both made our way to the garage and into our patrol car. A part of me wanted to tell her what happened, but I knew it was only going to be dangerous for her to know. So I kept my mouth shut about Raphael and the new demon me. Instead, we talked about cop shit, TV shows, and a bunch of other bullshit that could help pass the time away. We handed out a couple of tickets to some deserving bad drivers and then docked for another late lunch/dinner at one of our favorite diners. The problem I’d been facing for the past five hours though, was hunger. It’d been over twenty-four hours since I… I guess, ate. My body was feeling the side effects of what I am if I don’t feed and they weren’t pleasant.

As I looked around the restaurant, I noticed all of the auras of the people sitting in there eating. Some were black, blue, yellow, and a lot of red. Sheila’s was black, too. I supposed mine would have been as well, if I still casted one. Red was new to me. I wondered what it meant? Raphael didn’t mention anything about that color. I needed to ask him, but now that I think about it, I didn’t have his fucking phone number.
